Reindeers and Snowflakes

Avery was crazy about Molly's reindeer shirt, so she needed one of her own. When I ask her to show me her reindeer, she sticks out her belly like so.

The pants are the Farbenmix Dortje pattern from the book Sewing Clothes Kids Love. The big dot fabric is from Heather Bailey's line Nicey Jane, and the snowflakes are by Barbara Jones (Hip Holidays I think). Avery is crazy about pockets these days, so these pants are a hit.

I made the shirt with the same transfer paper here. I don't think the monochrome image turned out as well as Molly's shirt did. You can definitely notice the flaws, but Avery is certainly pleased to have her reindeer.

Hot Cereal Mix Issues

You have to go check out my sister's hot cereal mix post today. It is seriously funny and sadly true. We're obsessed with this stuff. The post and the recipe will not disappoint.

P.S. Helpful hint - Double the recipe. You won't regret it!!

Happy "Customer"

When Lil Blue Boo and Free Pretty Things for You posted this super cute tutorial and download the other day, I knew I had to give it a try. I found my printable transfer paper at Walmart for about $8.50 for 6 sheets and turtlenecks for $3.50, so I would be out too much if it didn't work out.

Isn't that deer just the cutest?!? I'm sure the Dharma product Lil Blue Boo uses is much better quality, but I think this worked out just fine. It only has to last for a month after all! I paired the top with a Girly Skirt pattern by Pink Fig. The fabrics are by Pillow & Maxfield for Michael Miller.

molly xmas

This was actually a little surprise gift for Avery's friend Molly. The report from Mary Jo, Molly's mother, was that Molly slept with the outfit the first night and insisted on wearing it the next day. So sweet! Gotta love a happy recipient.

Tea Party

Well, I took the pictures of Avery in her Feliz as promised, but it has taken me forever to actually narrow down the ones to share and get this posted. Avery had a fun day complete with cookies and tea.

The Balloon Effect

What started out as a simple exercise ballooned into a full blown outfit this past weekend. I've pretty much decided to use this pattern, the Feliz by Farbenmix, for Avery's Christmas dress this year. For me, Farbenmix patterns run a little on the big side, but Avery is a little on the big side too. All this to say, I wasn't sure what size to make the Christmas dress. I had found a seller on etsy that made the Feliz in one layer instead of the over and under dress. I figured this would be a quick way to decide if I was on track with my sizing. After a few emails with the etsy designer, I was all set with how to make the modifications to the pattern. Then I started pulling out fabrics and trims. This quickly got out of hand. I recently received a great bag full of yummy vintage trims from my grandmother. Some of these truly make me swoon. (Yes, I do swoon for fabric and trims.) After I had the cute top, I couldn't stop there either. Thankfully, the Modkid Sophie pattern came together super quick and the fit is spot on. I'm hoping to get photos with my model tomorrow, but I knew I wouldn't be able to capture the details with her in motion.

Survival Mode

Avery and I finally made it to the end of our longest stretch with Daddy out of town. Todd spent Monday through Friday in Houston for work, and the girls stayed home. Everything really went smoothly, but I'm thankful to have my partner back.

I didn't do much cooking during the week, but I did manage to try out one new recipe. Avery seems to be a budding vegetarian. She only eats meat when she's in the mood which is rare. So I tried these veggie fritters the other night, and they did not disappoint.
From Cooking for Baby:

Ingredients:
1 medium sweet potato
1 large zucchini
1 cup corn meal or flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
salt and pepper
1 egg, beaten
2 Tbsp canola oil
sour cream for dipping

Preheat oven to 250 degrees.
Peel and grate sweet potato. Grate zucchini, leaving skin on. You will have about 1 cup of each. Wrap grated veggies in a clean kitchen towel or paper towels and gently squeeze to extract as much liquid as possible. Transfer to a medium mixing bowl.
In a small bowl, combine corn flour and baking powder. Season with salt and pepper. Add flour mixture and egg to vegetables and stir until combined.
In a large frying pan over medium heat, heat oil. Scoop out about 2 tablespoons of batter, form into rounded balls with wet hands, and flatten into cakes. In batches, cook cakes, turning once, until brown and crisp, 2-3 minutes total. Using a slotted spoon and letting the oil drip back into the pan, transfer to paper towels to drain, then place on a baking sheet in a low oven to keep warm until all fritters are made. Repeat with remaining vegetable mixture.
-----
Like I said earlier Avery handled Todd's absence like a champ; however, his return ended up being pretty rough. Friday night after Todd had come home, Avery slept like a newborn. She was up every 3 hours screaming to get in Mommy and Daddy's bed. It was rough. Then, the next morning Todd went out to a garage sale just down the street. I watched as Avery carried the stool from the bathroom sink to the back door. She proceeded to stand on the stool and look out the window until Todd's return. I think it's sweet; I'm just glad the whole week wasn't like this.

Avery and Todd had some quality time together yesterday when Todd took Avery to her first Ole Miss football game. It was freezing, and I think they only made it through the first quarter. They did have some fun while it lasted though.

Festive Pumpkins

It was time for a new mantel rotation, so I dressed it up for fall. I'm very lacking in the fall/Thanksgiving decor department, so it's a little skimpy.

P1020289

I did craft up some fabric pumpkins loosely based on this tutorial by Tatertots & Jello. I love her use of ruffles, but I elected to omit them to show off more of the fabric on mine.

P1020292

After seeing these, my sister wanted some for her dining room table. I made hers a larger tall skinny version. These are very fast to pull together, so get decorating!
